If you live in the suburbs of a major city, you more than likely commute to work each and every workday. This can be a stressful part of your working life, as you may spend an hour or more each day stuck in traffic and dealing with drivers that are distracted and irritable.

You figure this is just part of living in the suburbs. You get to live in a quiet community with good schools and access to amenities, and in exchange you have to fight the traffic and spend time stuck in your car. However, there are other alternatives.

Carpooling is becoming a very popular alternative to driving to work alone. Not only will you save gas, you save wear and tear on your car. Making Your Commute Enjoyable

If you ride the bus or subway each day for work, you may get stressed out from the crowds, off schedule drivers, and simply being stuck for such a long time each day.  But there are certainly worse ways to spend your commute.  In many places there are no public transportation systems so you would have to fight traffic and drive yourself each day.   This may not be enough to make you enjoy your trip, but hopefully you at least appreciate the options you have available to you.

There are some things you can do to make your commute a more enjoyable experience.  This will  make your workday easier and you will be a more productive worker and happier person.

  • Stop by your favorite coffee shop, or pick up a soda or cup of tea.  This will give you something you enjoy during your commute and if you are someone who likes to start the day with caffeine you will start perking up.
  • Invest in a laptop computer using your prepaid card.  This will allow you to start working, or perhaps play your favorite game while you are commuting.  You can either get started with your workday, or give you a nice distraction.
  • Dress for the weather.  If you are cold or hot you are going to be more unhappy during your commute than if you are comfortable.   Wearing layers will allow you to adjust for a driver that blasts the heat or air conditioner and will assure that you remain comfortable.

Traveling for Work Isn’t That Bad

Traveling for work can be exciting, but if it is something you have to do often you may be tired of it.  There are many things you can do to make it less of a burden and more enjoyable however.  A lot of it has to do with putting yourself in the right frame of mind, so the first thing to do is to not dread job related travel.  You have to remember it is just part of your job.  Likely if you travel often for work, you have more off time to balance it out.

If you travel to the same location often, you can hopefully find a way to make this location your second home.  Find a restaurant or tavern that you like to visit, and stop by often.  If you become a regular, you will feel more at home.  If you attend church regularly at home, you may think about finding a church in your second home.  If you enjoy sports events, maybe there is a local team you can go watch during your off time.  No matter what you enjoy doing, you should try and fulfill that desire while you are traveling, this will make you feel more comfortable and happy during your trips.

Some people dread the flight or train ride they have to regularly make.  If you fly often you should invest in something that makes your flights more enjoyable.  Many people enjoy having a laptop computer that they can work on, or watch movies on.  Even if you have an over 3 hour flight, watch a couple of movies and the flight is over before you know it.  Renting movies on Redbox or other DVD rental kiosks is affordable and you can return the movies across the country.  Other great ways to pass time while traveling include playing games online if your flight has internet access or napping.
