  • Unless you must meet with a client immediately upon arrival in your destination city, wear comfortable clothing for your flight and change into a suit or business attire later.
  • As a frequent business traveler, quality luggage is a must. Invest in a good set of hard-sided luggage, which resists tears and stains better than soft-sided luggage. Luggage should be waterproof and have wheels for easy maneuvering.
  • If you can just take one carry-on bag, do so. This saves you from having to wait at the luggage carousel when you get off the plane.
  • Have an envelope handy to keep all your receipts in as you go about your business trip. If you can, log expenses onto an expense report during your trip so that it will be all ready to submit when you get back to work.
  • If you are traveling overseas, familiarize yourself with customs of the country you are visiting, especially with respect to business etiquette and tipping.
  • If you’re traveling with a laptop, find out what type of Internet connection is available at your hotel (wi-fi or high-speed) and plan accordingly. If it’s a high-speed connection, consider packing your own ethernet cable, just in case the hotel does not provide one.
  • Another tech tip for business travelers is to bring a USB flash drive along and backup any presentations or vital information on the flash drive. This way, if you have computer trouble during your trip, you can simply bring the flash drive to your client’s office and show them the information on one of their computers.
  • Be sure to sign up for all the frequent flyer programs and hotel clubs. This can result in significant savings on airfare and accommodations, up to and including free flights and free nights at participating hotels.

Are job Fairs a Waste of Time?

Article Content Believe it or not, job fairs can be as useful as you want to make them.  For some people, a job fair is a complete waste of time, because all they are going to do is bop around and talk to people until they have made the rounds a couple of times.  But for other people, a job fair can be a great use of their time and end up being very effective, since they can meet some contacts, distribute their resumes and even interview for jobs on the spot.  While you can choose to be either of these types of people, you have to accept the responsibility for how you see a job fair, as well as how you approach the situation.

On the one hand, a job fair is a great chance to meet with recruiters.  In some cases, you can actually impress them enough that they will be willing to offer you an interview right on the spot.  You have to admit, it would be pretty cool to walk into a job fair, and a couple of hours later walk out with a job offer.  Of course, this does not happen to many of the people who walk in, but the chance to do so makes it more than worth the small amount of time and effort that goes into the deal.

But on the other hand, the entire job fair atmosphere can be a little bit rushed.  In a lot of cases, the best that you can do is to hand out a lot of your resumes, get a lot of business cards (and put them into those goofy plastic bags they always give you, like it’s the dentist or something), and try to get an interview later on.  In most cases, they are not going to remember you, since they spoke to hundreds of people that day.  But then, if you don’t attend, you will never be able to try.
